The roman noir, made popular a half century ago by writers such as Cornell Woolrich, Jim Thompson and James M. Cain, is making a comeback in the twenty-first century. These novels typically follow a similar theme: A venal woman induces her loser boy friend to enter a life of crime – and murder.

C. M. Albrecht’s dark and tragic first novel, “The Little Mornings” (Zumaya Publications $ 15) begins with this premise, but in this tale, things are never what they seem.

When part-time house painter Darcy Lemarsh runs into Angela Berry, it doesn’t take him long to realize that she’s one rose short of a dozen – but hey, she’s hot.

It takes Darcy a bit longer to realize that Angie’s alcoholic grandfather, Professor Jason Berry is nearly as dotty as his granddaughter – but when the old man sells a potential best-seller to a major publishing company, he turns to Darcy.

Part of his contract calls for Professor Berry to go on tour to promote his novel, but he can’t even make it down the hall to the bathroom; he has to make do with the empty wine jugs that litter his cluttered room. But he has a plan: Darcy can take his place.

Shaken at first by the suggestion, Darcy quickly succumbs to the heady thought of being a famous author, a man with nice clothes, a nice haircut, and an expense account.

Of course Angie isn’t going to allow Darcy to run all over the country without her. But almost as soon as the tour commences, things start going sideways. First, the old man dies, leaving Angie and Darcy on their own. Then, just as the tour really gets going, a wild card in the form of Arthur Haviland turns up. He claims that he actually wrote the book that Darcy is promoting as his own – a book that ominously parallels the Darcy and Angie’s own lives.

That’s when things turn ugly as greed enters the picture. Angie begins plotting Haviland’s murder.

But that’s only the beginning. Angie’s problems worsen and manifest themselves in ways Darcy never expected. He realizes that if he hopes to pull out of this mess, he’s going to have to resort to even more drastic measures than the murder of Arthur Haviland. But this is where the novel takes another turn sideways, and it is only at the end, that Darcy’s true character is revealed.

Lindsey, who first tried her hand at writing children’s books in 1989 when she was rearing her three now-grown daughters, moved to Holmes County in 2001 from Dallas with her husband, Pete Lindsey. They had relatives in the vicinity, including his parents, James and Margaret Lindsey, who live in North Carrollton.

“Sara’s Magical Journey,” a 48-page trade paperback just coming out from Publish America, is about the adventures of a 12-year old girl who goes for a walk in the woods near her rural home one day and finds another world. The book is the first in a trilogy.

Lindsey’s first efforts were more traditional ” picture books” for children, but after getting nowhere getting them published, Lindsey put the manuscripts and the writing aside. She was still reading to her children, Amanda Hawthorne, now 23 and with a youngster of her own, Caden; Ashley Williams,20; and Jordan Sonnenberg, 15, however.

” I found out real quick you could publish, if you were willing to pay– and I wasn’t. I even got hand written letters from some saying they’d publish if I paid them $ 1,500 , and no way was I going to pay $ 1,500 to somebody I don’t know,” Lindsey said.

Yet, she had a yearning to see her writings in print.

” I felt there would be a sense of accomplishment and pride that I had written something people would read and hopefully enjoy,” Lindsey said.

She grew up mostly in the small town of Corbin, Ky. She and her three sisters, twin Tonia Williams, Rhonda Young, and Angie Asper, were reared by their grandmother. All three sang, but only she has kept up with the singing, Lindsey said.

After moving to the Dallas area, she sang with a group called ” Breeze” and for 10 years worked in sales.

Currently, she and Pete, to whom she has been married since 1998, perform together in a band when they’re not working as house-painters, writers, and now–book promoters. Every other Saturday night, the group plays in what used to be Farrish’s Store on Mississippi 17 near Blackhawk. Pete, who went searching for prospective publishers for Sonia via the internet and found Publish America for her, is a drummer.

The band is ” me, Pete, Charles Lucas, Doug Walker, Charles Grantham, and Dennis Bell,” the newly published fantasy writer said. Saturday, they’re playing at Farrish’s and music cranks up about 7:30pm. After the program winds down the afternoon of the book signing party at the Community House, they’ll also perform, Lindsey said.

She wrote ” Sara’s Magical Journey” last summer. Initially, she submitted one of the four pre-school level picture books she’d written earlier, but it was turned down. She queried the publisher about the manuscript on which she was working and was invited to submit it. Lindsey got a “yes” within the week.

In October she’ll submit the second in the trilogy, ” Sara’s Magical Journey: Back To Tonisia,” which ” takes place underwater.” She’s working on the concluding volume but hasn’t decided on a title.

” The publisher wants me to concentrate on promoting the book for the next three months,” she said.

” Journey,” she thinks, is suitable for children, starting at age 8, through adults. ” I wanted to see what I could do with fantasy; C.S.Lewis is one of my favorites,” Lindsey said. ” In fifth grade, I won a book report contest on Lewis’ ‘ Lion, Witch, and the Wardrobe’ at school. I won a Butterfinger and a dime. I went home and told my grandmother, and the next morning on my nightstand, I found another Butterfinger,” Lindsey said.

She’s working on another project relating to this childhood experience.

“The independent music scene has very colorful artists and fans. Once upon a time there was a place called Bronzeville. It was a robust and thriving African American entertainment and cultural neighborhood. In the 1930s, world-renown musicians such as Duke Ellington, Dinah Washington and Cab Calloway played to appreciative audiences of all races. The number of black businesses in Bronzeville exceeded those owned by whites. And Bronzeville was in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

This is no fairy tale. Bronzeville was a primarily African American business and entertainment district on Walnut Street between North 3rd and North 12th Streets. After the 1950s racism, segregation, and freeway construction all played a role in Bronzeville’s demise.

Now a group is hoping to play a central role in bringing Bronzeville back to life.

Banneker Developers is a partnership between Andrea Nembhard, Rick Norris, Bennie Joyner Jr. and Mark Holland who are all established African American business owners. Nembhard has owned a real estate agency for over 20 years, Norris has a civil engineering business, Joyner is a commercial painter and Holland rounds out the group as a general contractor.

The partners in Banneker Developers were a part of the inaugural session of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Minority Business Roundtable. With this partnership, insights from the roundtable session have gone beyond the board room and into the community. After the 10 month Minority Business Roundtable session, the partners decided to create a new business that would focus on bringing Milwaukee’s housing boom to the African American community.

The reason for the partnership can be summed up as Rick Norris said, “We have to take advantage of the chance to create new businesses when that opportunity arrives.”

According to the SBDC, taking advantage of opportunities is what successful business people do. One issue the Minority Business Roundtable address is business growth. The growth channels they concentrate on are attracting new customers and diversifying the business through partnerships.

“This is what we have been dreaming of. The Minority Business Roundtable encourages business owners to grow larger scale businesses. Partnerships and new business growth like this is the goal of our program,” says Lucy Holifield, director of the UWM Small Business Development Center in the School of Continuing Education.

The scope of Banneker Developers is firmly focused on the redevelopment of Bronzeville. Bronzeville was a historically black neighborhood and noted cultural and entertainment center. The goal of the Bronzeville project is to bring the area back to its former prominence as a mecca for African American culture.

The new district is in the heart of the African American community and adjacent to the historic district. The new boundaries are between HWY-43 to the west and Martin Luther King Dr. to the east and Center Street. on the north and Garfield Avenue to the south.

Rebuilding this part of the city’s history is vital to the black community and the economic health of the Milwaukee. According to the market research performed by the City of Milwaukee Department of City Development, the area’s current property tax value is around $ 7million yearly. The report also says the area boasts annual business revenues of about $ 230 million, but has the potential to increase that to $ 400 million. The new Bronzeville has the potential to generate over $ 20 million in property taxes.

To tap into that potential and to revitalize the area, the Common Council has approved $ 3.5 million in funding and the creation of a tax incremental district to make the new Bronzeville a reality.

Banneker Developers is poised to build that reality. Nembhardt says that Banneker Developers will be “aggressive and deliberate in our approach” with its operations in Bronzeville. “We will primarily focus on developing new commercial and residential properties, but we will also rehab some existing properties.”

The Minority Business Roundtable can be credited in laying the ground work for Banneker Developers. Clearly, breaking the new law can hurt both RRP firms and their clients. Seattle-based painting contractor Shearer Painting announces it is EPA lead-safe certified and consistently employs the agency’s approved work methods. Shearer conducts lead-based repair, renovation, and house painting activities and has fall protection in compliance with OSHA. The Environmental Protection Agency reports on their press release website that significant fines have been levied against contractors not conducting lead safe practices as mandated by law. In April 2008, the Environmental Protection Agency formulated a new policy regarding firms that specialize in repair, renovation, or house painting. The RRP Rule, which took effect in April 2010, is designed to minimize both worker and client exposure to lead paint flakes or dust.

In buildings constructed before 1978, when the U.S. banned lead paint, RRP workers tend to generate a significant amount of lead debris. Those who work on apartment buildings, houses, child-care centers, and some schools must be trained in lead-safe practices, and their employer must be certified according to EPA requirements. The maximum fine for violating the law is $ 37,500 per violation per day. The RRP Rule requires workers to contain their work area, minimize dust, clean up thoroughly, and provide appropriate literature regarding lead safety to tenants or homeowners.

Although these demands seem like common sense, some firms still run afoul of the new law, usually to cut corners and save money. As reported by EPA inspector David Deegan, (617) 918-1017, through the EPA website; A contractor in Rockland, Maine, currently faces penalties for violating the RRP Rule during an October 2010 repainting project. According to inspectors from the EPA and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the contractor’s workers didn?t contain the debris created by their removal of lead paint. In addition, though he attended an EPA-approved eight-hour training course, the contractor failed to properly train and supervise his employees.
